Over 20 elite Israeli troops were killed or wounded while attempting to advance in southern Lebanon, Hezbollah announced on October 5.
In a statement to Hezbollah’s Military Media, a field commander from the group’s operations room said that the failed Israeli advance attempts targeted the towns of Maroun al-Ras and Yaroun, which are located just a few meters away from the separation line with Israel.
“Yesterday afternoon, Friday [October 4], the elite soldiers of the Israeli enemy army, after artillery and air cover, tried to advance from two axes towards the towns of Maroun al-Ras and Yaroun at the front edge. Upon the forces’ arrival at the previously prepared ambush points, and with the call of “Labbaik Ya Nasrallah,” the Islamic Resistance fighters detonated a number of explosive devices (some of which were planted yesterday) and clashed with the elite officers and soldiers with light and medium weapons and rockets, from close ranges reaching zero distance, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries among the ranks of the infiltrating force. Those who were not injured carried a dead or wounded person and withdrew under artillery cover from the enemy’s positions inside the occupied territories,” the unnamed commander said.
“The Islamic Resistance fighters monitor, follow, and confront every hostile movement at the front edge in southern Lebanon, and pursue the Israeli enemy soldiers in their bases and rear barracks along the border line in the occupied territories, with artillery shells and rocket salvos,” he added.
Also on October 4, Hezbollah fired some 180 rockets at Israel, targeting military gatherings along the border and other targets deeper into the north of the country. The group fighters also destroyed a Merkava main battle tank at the Malikiyah border site.
Separately, the group released video footage showing recent drone attacks that targeted a military camp and an artillery position in northern Israel.
From its side, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on October 4 that its units had killed some 250 Hezbollah fighters since the start of ground operations in southern Lebanon earlier in the week. It also released videos showing recent strikes as well as troops operations along the border.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah and its allies launching near-daily attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah. The IDF officially announced the launch of a ground operation in Lebanon on September 30.
Overall, the confrontation between Hezbollah and IDF has so far resulted in 26 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 31 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, over 2,000 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
