Hezbollah on March 29 shared footage documenting a battle between its fighters and Israeli troops that took place near the town of Qantara in southern Lebanon three days earlier.

The battle began when an armored formation of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) attempted to advance towards Qantara from the town of Taybeh in the region’s eastern sector. Hezbollah fighters fought fiercely to defend the latter, targeting Israeli troops and vehicles with rockets, mortars, anti-tank guided missiles, and even drones.

The group claimed at the time that its fighters destroyed or damaged a total of ten Merkava main battle tanks and two D9 armored bulldozers.

The footage shows multiple hits, in addition to the deployment of a smoke screen by the IDF to evacuate wounded troops and damaged vehicles.

In recent days, the IDF expanded its “targeted” ground operation in southern Lebanon, specifically in the western sector of the region.

The military said on March 29 that its 146th Division is operating in the western sector, which lies along the coast, to establish a new buffer zone and push away the threat of Hezbollah.

The division reached strategic positions from which the IDF said that Hezbollah could launch attacks on Israel, including the Ras al-Bayada headland, south of the city of Tyre, located around eight kilometers from the Blue Line marking Israel’s declared border.

Recent advances didn’t come with losses, however. The IDF admitted that a soldier from the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion was killed and three others were wounded while operating in southern Lebanon over the night of March 27 and 28 as a result of a rocket attack by Hezbollah.

The incident is separate from another rocket attack on troops in Lebanon on March 28 , during which some 20 Israeli troops were hurt, including seven moderately. Among those moderately hurt in that attack was a lieutenant colonel from the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit.

Senior Israeli officials have openly stated the IDF aims to establish a demilitarized zone in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River — 20 to 30 kilometers away from the Blue Line —, which would be controlled with surveillance and firepower, as well as ground troops in areas deemed strategically necessary.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said on March 29 that he ordered the IDF to further expand the buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
