A hanger housing an American U-2 Dragon Lady spy plane at United Kingdom’s RAF Akrotiri air base in Cyprus was damaged as result of a recent drone attack, The Sun reported on March 5.
The attack took place on March 1, just a day after the United States and Israel attacked Iran sparking a regional war. At the time, British Defence Secretary John Healey claimed the damage caused by the attack on RAF Akrotiri was “minimal”.
A fleet of U-2s is permanently based at RAF Akrotiri as part of a decades-long spy mission codenamed Olive Harvest. Designed for all-weather, day-and-night intelligence gathering at altitudes above 70,000 feet, the U-2 can soak up signals intelligence, take detailed photographs, test the atmosphere for radiation from nuclear weapons tests, and even act as a communication node.
A photo obtained by The Sun shows a gaping 30ft hole in the side of a hangar used to house U-2s. It said that a fireball erupted from the hangar when it was struck.
“There were no casualties and thorough assessments determine that the damage is minimal,” a spokesman for the UK’s Ministry of Defence told The Sun after being confronted with the photo
“There has been no damage to equipment inside the hangar.”
While The Sun described the drones that attacked RAF Akrotiri as “Iranian,” previous reports by British and Cypriot media tied two attacks that targeted the air base on March 1 and 2 to Hezbollah, alleging that the drones were all launched from Lebanon.

Hezbollah joined the war alongside Iran on the day the first attack on the British base took place, sparking a new conflict with Israel and ending a ceasefire in Lebanon brokered by the United States more than 15 months ago.
The UK and the rest of NATO has reinforced their air defense capabilities at RAF Akrotiri since the attacks, deploying additional warplanes and warships.
Still, siren warning that a ballistic missile launched from Iran might be heading towards RAF Akrotiri sounded on March 6. The warning came as Healey sat down in a secure room on the air base.
