On September 10, a prominent opposition leader in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa known as Muhammad Jamal al-Jalm was assassinated.
Unidentified gunmen shot al-Jalm in front of his house in the town of Jasim in northern Daraa. Al-Jalm was quickly hospitalized. However, he died of his wounds in a short time.
Al-Jalm was a judge in the “House of Justice in Houran,” an Islamic court that ruled over Daraa when the governorate was controlled by Free Syrian Army factions.

Following the 2018 reconciliation agreement, al-Jalm, who is also known as “Abu Baraa,” became a member of Daraa’s Reconciliation Council.
According to several sources, al-Jalm was recently involved in a series of successful talks with Syrian security officials. The talks resulted in an agreement that boosted cooperation between local fighters and security forces in Jasim.
Last May, ISIS-affiliated militants killed three senior members of the Reconciliation Council in Daraa. The terrorist group, which is active in northern Daraa, may have been behind the assassination of al-Jalm.
ISIS and other sides are working to sabotage any understanding between the government and local fighters in Daraa. A state of lawlessness is now prevailing over the governorate. A day earlier, a senior Syrian general was killed there.

Before the Russians moved in Darra was getting bad, there’s no denying it, but at least while they were here things calmed down a little, people were at least talking, but now the Russian’s [5th army corps] have been booted out things are reaching nightmare proportions. I don’t agree with Russian policy on Turkish controlled Syria but here in Darra the Russians were providing Assad the best option, letting Hezbollah take over again is a really big mistake, anti Hezbollah and anti Iranian sentiment is what caused most of the trouble in the first place, so giving them more control and power is just like pouring petrol on a fire. And I don’t think Putin will be able to tell Assad ‘I told you so’ if Darra gets any worse, it’ll be too late, Quneitra and as Suwayda will be quick to follow if a second rebellion starts in Darra, and they’ll just be the tip of the iceberg, the snowball effect will encourage other reconciled rebels to unreconcile with the government too, and that’s about the last thing Assad needs right now, come back Russia before it’s too late.
