A wave of rocket and drone attacks have targeted four bases of the United States military in Syria’s northern and eastern regions.
Late on December 30, a salvo of 14 rockets targeted the Green Village base at al-Omar oil fields in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside, while 12 other rockets targeted the nearby Euphrates Mission Support Site at the Conoco gas plant. Video footage posted to social media showed U.S. C-RAM [Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar] systems at the two bases attempting to shoot down the incoming rockets.
The Green Village base was attacked for the second time in the early hours of December 31 with at least three suicide drones.
Citing a U.S. defense official, Fox News journalist Jennifer Griffin said on X, previously known as Twitter, none of the rockets or drones hit the two U.S. bases. According to the unnamed official, there were no casualties or damage.
Later on in the morning, an attack with at least one suicide targeted the Rmelan base in the northeastern countryside of al-Hasakah. An armed drone also fired two munitions at the nearby Khrab al-Jir airstrip, according to the Beirut-based Al Mayadeen TV. It is still unclear if the attacks resulted in any losses.
U.S. forces responded to the initial attacks on the Green Village base Euphrates Mission Support Site by targeting positions of Iranian-backed forces in the government-held town of al-Mayadin and nearby areas in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside. However, no casualties were reported.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iranian-backed factions, claimed responsibility for the attack on al-Rmean base only. The group said that the attack was carried out in response to Israeli “massacres” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria began on October 17, ten days after the war broke out in Gaza. Since then, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy has documented more than 120 attacks in the two countries. The IRI claimed responsibility for most of these attacks.
The last wave of attacks on U.S. bases in northern and eastern Syria may have been carried out in response to strikes that targeted Iranian-backed forces in the government-held town of al-Bukamal in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside on December 30.
Four fighters of Lebanon’s Hezbollah were killed in the mysterious strikes, which were unofficially blamed on both the U.S. and Israel. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based monitoring group, said that five Syrian fighters and 16 from other nationals affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, were also killed in the attack. However, this is yet to be confirmed.
