A suicide drone launched from Yemen by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) struck Ramon Airport terminal in southern Israel after evading the country’s dense air defense network on September 7.
Videos posted to social networks showed smoke rising from the airport terminal, as well as shattered glass and debris at an area where baggage is screened.
Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service said that a 63-year-old man was lightly injured as a result of the drone attack.
No sirens were activated amid the attack because the drone was not detected before it hit the airport, according to a preliminary probe in the Israeli Air Force (IAF). The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that the attack was under further investigation and “the details are being looked into.”
Israel briefly closed the airspace over Ramon Airport following the drone attack, but all operations resumed within a few hours.
The airport was struck after the IDF said that the IAF shot down three other Houthi drones close to the border with Egypt. Two of the drones were intercepted before crossing Israel’s borders, and the third was shot down after entering Israeli airspace, according to the military. Sirens sounded in several settlements along the border amid the interceptions.
Footage showing what appears to be an Israeli AH-64 Apache attack helicopter intercepting one of the drones surfaced online later.
The Houthis have not yet claimed responsibility for the drone attack. Usually, the group’s military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree announces attacks on Israel within 24 hours of them taking place.
The Houthis have stepped up missile and drone attacks on Israel since August 28, when the IAF launched strikes on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, killing the Prime Minister of the group’s government, Ahmed al-Rahawi, along with eight of the ministers. That was the sixteenth attack by the IDF on the country.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive in he Gaza Strip, the Houthis have launched 80 ballistic missiles and at least 31 suicide drones at Israel.
The successful attack on Ramon Airport will likely trigger a violent response from the IDF. Israel could use the attack as a pretext to escalate against Yemen like never before. Still, the Houthis, who have already survived hundreds of American, British and Israeli strikes, will not likely be deterred.
