Houthi Missiles, Drones Hit Another Merchant Vessel In Gulf Of Aden

The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on July 19 that they had attacked an Israel-linked merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden.

The vessel Lobivia was targeted with a number of ballistic missiles and drones, Houthi military spokesman, Brigade General Yahya Sarea, said in a statement, noting that the ship was attacked because it is owned by a company that violated the group’s blockade on Israeli ports.

“Our operations, with God’s help, will not stop until we stop the [Israeli] aggression and lift the siege imposed on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” the spokesman added.

The United Kingdom maritime security consultancy Vanguard confirmed that Lobivia struck by a number of projectiles 83 nautical miles southeast of the Yemeni port of Aden. The ship suffered damage to its port side mid-ship. No injuries were reported.

Ambrey, another UK maritime security consultancy, stated that the Lobivia was transiting northeast along the Gulf of Aden when a merchant vessel in the vicinity observed “light and blast” where the ship was located. The ship appeared to perform evasive maneuvers immediately and switch off its automatic identification system.

The attack came just hours after a suicide drone launched by the Houthis from Yemen hit the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, killing a man and wounding eight others.

Since November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.

In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in response to the group’s attack. The strikes killed some 40 people, including civilians, and wounded more than 126 others. Yet, they failed to deter the Houthis or to degrade their military capabilities.
