At least 14 Sudanese service members were killed and 9 others were injured in a rocket attack by the Houthis on their camp in the southern part of Saudi Arabia’s Jizan, a spokesman for the Yemen group revealed on August 2.

“The attack on the Sudanese mercenaries was carried out after a careful intelligence operation, it was conducted with a number of Zilzal-1 and Katyusha rockets,” Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari said.

The Houthis use the codename “Zilzal-1” to refer to a variety of local improvised rocket-assisted munitions (IRAMs) and the name “Katyusha” to refer to Soviet M13 132mm rockets or Chinese Type 63 107mm rockets.

The rocket attack is a major blow to the Sudanese military, the second biggest contributor to the Saudi-led coalition after the Saudi military itself. Since the outbreak of the war in 2015, more than 1,200 Sudanese soldiers and officers have been killed in Yemen by the Houthis.

The April 11 Sudanese coup d’état didn’t change the country’s stand on the Yemeni war. The country’s Transitional Military Council stressed on many occasions that it will remain committed to the Saudi-led coalition.

They will by their families. Wouldn’t it have been better if they had just stayed at home and done something constructive.
