UPDATED: The footage confirmed the interception of the fifth MQ-9 Reaper UAV of the US Air Force By Houthi forces:
The Houthis from the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement shot down another MQ-9 Reaper drone of the US Air Force in the sky over the province of Al-Bayda, located in the western part of the country. The spokesman fr the Yemeni Armed Forces Yahya Saree officially confirmed the reports.
This is the fith American MQ-9 Reaper UAV shot down over Yemen since the beginning of the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, following the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The UAV was destroyed by the Houthi missile.
“Air defense systems of the Armed Forces of Yemen <…> an American MQ-9 [Reaper] drone was shot down when it was carrying out a hostile mission in the sky over the province of Al-Bayda,” reads the official report. “The drone was hit by a locally produced surface-to-air missile,” he added.
The previous US-made MQ-9 Reaper UAV was destroyed over the central Yemen province of Ma’rib on May 16. The first three were shot down on November 14, February 19 and April 25.
The US military is suffering significant damage from Yemeni-made missiles. Each MQ-9 UAV costs about $30 million.
MQ-9 combat UAVs are primarily aimed for reconnaissance operations, but they also conduct pinpoint strikes. The advanced drones can operate for more than 27 hours and reach altitudes of over 25,000 feet. The Houthis are apparently using their Barq-1 or Barq-2 missiles to shoot down this targets. Both missiles are thought to be derivative of the Iranian-made Taer-2, which is guided by semi-active radar, with a range of 50 and 70 kilometers respectively.

After the escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the Ansar Allah movement warned that it would launch strikes on the territory of Israel and would not allow ships linked to the enemy state to pass through the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until the operation in the Palestinian enclave stops. Since November last year, the Houthis have attacked dozens of vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In March, the leader of the movement, Abdul-Malik Badruldeen al-Houthi warned that his supporters intend to attack Israeli-linked ships that will cross the Indian Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope. On May 3, the Houthis announced that they would attack ships heading to Israeli ports in the entire range, including the Mediterranean Sea.
Washington continues to persuade the Houthis through closed channels to stop attacks on ships off the coast of Yemen in exchange for a partial lifting of sanctions and another exclusion of the Houthis from the list of “terrorist organizations.”
