The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on February 20 that they had launched a missile attack against “an Israeli ship” in the Gulf of Aden.
In a statement, Houthi military spokesperson Brigade General Yahya Sarea identified the targeted ship as “MSC Silver,” and said that it was hit with several missiles.
The spokesman added his group fired several suicide drones toward Israel’s southernmost city of Eilat as well as several U.S. warships in the Red Sea.
Later, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the Houthis fired on February 19 two anti-ship ballistic missiles at the Sea Champion, a Greek-flagged, U.S.-owned grain carrier in the Gulf of Aden. The group had already claimed responsibility for the attack.
“Minor damage and no injuries were reported. The ship continued toward its scheduled destination to deliver grain to Aden, Yemen,” the command said in a statement posted on the X social platform, previously known as Twitter.
The command also said that a surface to air missile launcher was located and destroyed by its forces in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen on the same day. One additional anti-ship ballistic missile was launched but did not impact any commercial or coalition ships, it added.
Later on the same day, a suicide drone struck the Navis Fortuna, a Marshall Islands-flagged, U.S.-owned, bulk carrier causing minor damage and no injuries, CENTCOM said, noting that the ship continued its voyage toward Italy.
CENTCOM forces destroyed another Houthi suicide drone in western Yemen. The command said that the drone was prepared to launch at ships in the Red Sea.
Overnight, aircraft and warships from the U.S.-led Operation Prosperity Guardian shot down ten more Houthi drones in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, according to the command.
In addition, CENTCOM said that USS Laboon, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, identified one anti-ship cruise missile headed in its direction then shot it down.
“These actions will protect navigational rights and freedoms and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels,” the command said in its statement.
Meanwhile in Israel, there were no reports in Hebrew media of any interceptions or blasts in Eilat or any nearby area. The Israeli military ignored the Houthis’ announcement.
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 19 in response to the ongoing Israeli war and siege on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 29,000 Palestinians.
In recent days, the group stepped up its attacks in all directions despite a significant increase in American and British strikes on Yemen.
