The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) announced on June 26 that the Houthis (Ansar Allah) had launched another ballistic missile from Yemen at Israel.
In a brief statement, the military said that it had detected the launch and determined soon after that the Houthi missile fell short outside Israel’s border. It also noted that no sirens sounded in the country because the missile did not pose a real threat.
This was the Houthis first attempt to target Israel since the end of the IDF attack on Iran. During the short war, the group launched multiple missiles and drones at Israel, even timing some attacks with Iranian retaliatory strikes. None of these attacks caused losses, however.
Also during the war, the IDF attempted to assassinate Houthi military chief of staff Muhammad al-Ghamari in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, but failed.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have launched some 50 ballistic missiles and around a dozen suicide drones at Israel. While the vast majority of the projectiles were intercepted or fell short, the attacks still created a sense of instability in Israel.
In response, at least five waves of Israeli strikes targeted infrastructure in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in recent weeks, from the ports in al-Hodeidah, to cement factories, power stations and Sanaa International Airport in the Yemeni capital. Still, the Houthis remain undeterred as evident by their latest missile attack.
The Yemeni group has repeatedly stated that it would cease its attacks on Israel only after the war and siege on Gaza are over.
