The Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced on April 27 that they had launched yet another “hypersonic ballistic missile” at Nevatim Air Base in southern Israel.
The attack was carried out “in support of the oppressed Palestinian people and their mujahideen” in the Gaza Strip, Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in a statement, claiming that “ the operation successfully achieved its goal.”
“The Yemeni Armed Forces affirm that, relying on God and seeking His help, they will continue to develop their military capabilities to meet current developments and break the arrogance and conceit of the American aggression. They affirm that they will continue their military operations in support of the oppressed Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, and that these operations will not cease until the aggression against Gaza is halted and the siege is lifted,” the spokesman added.
The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed that a missile was launched by the Houthis from Yemen, but said that it was successfully intercepted before it could enter Israeli airspace.
Sirens sounded in several towns south of the Dead Sea amid the attack. There were no reports of any casualties or damage, however.
Nevatim is home to the Israeli Air Force’s most advanced aircraft, including C-130J military transport planes, Boeing 707 and KC-130H refueling planes, GV Shavit and G550 Eitam/Oron early warning and intelligence planes, F-35I fighter jets and even the Boeing 767-338ER Wing of Zion plane used by senior officials.
This was the second missile launched by the Houthis at the air base in less than 24 hours. According to the IDF, the previous attack was also repelled.
The new attack came following a deadly wave of United States strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. The strikes targeted multiple locations across the capital, Sanaa, killing at least two people and wounding ten others.
Additional strikes hit several northern provinces, according to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV, which also reported three strikes on the Galaxy Leader, a cargo vessel seized by the Houthis in November 2023 during attacks on Red Sea shipping linked to Israel.
The U.S. military resumed strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on March 15 on orders from President Donald Trump, who said that the large-scale operation was launched in response to the group’s renewed attacks on Israel-affiliated shipping in the Red Sea.
The operation has so far claimed the lives of 219 people, but it is yet to deter the Houthis or degrade their military capabilities.
