On February 22, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen claimed responsibility for launching missile attacks against a British cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden.
“The naval forces of the Yemeni armed forces carried out an attack against a British ship, the Islander, in the Gulf of Aden, with several missiles,” Houthi military spokesperson Brigade General Yahya Sarea said in a statement.
The missiles directly hit the ship, causing a fire on it, said the spokesman, who also announced that an American destroyer in the Red Sea was targeted with several drones.
In the same statement, Brig. Gen. Sarea said that the Houthis also fired several ballistic missiles and drones towards the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat.
Earlier, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the Houthis fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles from southern Yemen into the Gulf of Aden. The command confirmed that the Palau-flagged, British-owned Islander was hit, but said that the ship was continuing its voyage.
CENTCOM also announced that aircraft and warships from the U.S.-led Operation Prosperity Guardian had shot down six Houthi suicide drones over the Red Sea.
“The OWA [one-way attack] UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles] were identified by the U.S. Central Command as likely targeting U.S. and coalition warships and were an imminent threat,” the command said in a statement.
Separately, the Israeli military said that its Arrow air defense system intercepted a ballistic missile that was apparently launched by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) from Yemen over the Red Sea. The missile was on its way to Eilat.
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 19 in response to the ongoing Israeli war and siege on the Gaza Strip.
The group escalated on February 22 by sending shippers and insurers formal notice of what they termed a ban on vessels linked to Israel, the U.S. and the UK from sailing in surrounding seas.
The communication, the first to the shipping industry outlining a ban, came in the form of two notices from the Houthis’ newly dubbed Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center sent to shipping insurers and firms.
Ships that are wholly or partially owned by Israeli individuals or entities and Israel-flagged vessels, or are owned by US or British individuals or entities, or sailing under their flags, are banned from the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea, the notices said.
“The Humanitarian Operations Center was established in Sanaa to coordinate the safe and peaceful passage of ships and vessels that have no connection to Israel,” a senior Houthi official told Reuters on the same day.
The U.S. and UK have already carried out dozens of strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. However, the group remains undeterred as evident by its recent attacks.
i was wondering why the ships never sink, but this is obvious. houthi are just damaging them because to have them on the bottom of the sea leaking oil can have serious consequenses for the environment. they have time and just wait until useful idiots will bring them more victories, honour and trophy weapons.
