The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen released on October 3 video footage documenting their attack on the Panama-flagged oil tanker Cordelia Moon in the Red Sea.
The Cordelia Moon was attacked by an uncrewed suicide boat some 64 nautical miles northwest of the Yemeni Red Sea port of al-Hodeidah, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported on October 1.
The tanker, which was in ballast condition, was damaged on its port side tank, British security firm Ambrey and the United States Navy-run Joint Maritime Information Center said, adding that it was proceeding to its next port of call.
The Houthis alleged that the Cordelia Moon was owned by the UK. The group said that the oil tanker was targeted in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanese as well as in response to recent American and British strikes on Yemen.
The footage released by the Houthis shows a large fireball bursting out of the vessel’s port side tank, sending a thick column of dark smoke into the air.
Since November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
The group also launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down at least eleven American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched two waves of strikes against civilian infrastructure in the western Yemeni province of al-Hodeidah in July and September. However, the group remains undeterred as evident by its recent attacks.
