The Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced on August 4 that they shot down a United States drone over Yemen and targeted a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden in response to the Israeli war on the the Gaza Strip and to recent American and British strikes on their country.
In a statement, Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea, said that the group shot down an MQ-9 Reaper combat drone of the U.S. military over the northern province of Saada using a “locally made surface-to-air missile.”
The group didn’t share footage of the downing. Nevertheless, photos showing the drone’s wreckage were posted to social networks.

The Houthis also attacked the merchant vessel Groton in the Gulf of Aden with “a number of ballistic missiles,” Brig. Gen. Sarea said, noting that the ship was targeted because it is owned by a company that violated the group’s ban on shipping to ports in “occupied Palestine.”
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported two attacks on a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden, confirming that it was hit. No casualties were reported by the agency, however.
“The Yemeni Armed Forces salute the valiant Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip for 300 days of steadfastness, heroism and sacrifice in defense of the nation, its pride and dignity and in victory for its sanctities,” Brig. Gen. Sarea concluded his statement, stressing that “the Yemeni Armed Forces will continue to carry out military operations … until the [Israeli] aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted.”
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea since November in response to the war on Gaza.
In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down seven American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
Since January, the U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its military capabilities, but to no avail.

hobbyists regularly make their own guided rockets and drones are quite slow, not that i’m saying your implication is wrong necessarily. programming + the right electronics soldered together and some motors for the fins. yemeni with the skill and desire to mix up rocket fuel are plentiful and the ingredients.
the sad fact is that for each drone that is shot down the us military industrial complex profits as they get to buy more at taxpayer expense. so for every drone that is shot down… champagne corks are flying in washington.
