On February 12, the Houthis’ media wing released a video showing the remains of an unnamed aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Saudi-led coalition. The UAV was shot down during the recent clashes in the area of al-Sawh in the Kingdom’s southern province of Najran.
Experts were able to identify the UAV as Luna X 2000, which is produced by EMT Penzberg of Germany. The UAV has an endurance of 6 hours and can perform a variety of tasks, including reconnaissance and electronic warfare.
The Saudi-led coalition lost at least one Luna X 2000 in Yemen before, in May of 2015. This small type of UAVs is usually active only along the Saudi-Yemeni border.
The Houthis repelled a major attack by the Saudi-led coalition in the area of al-Sawh and destroyed several Canadian-made armored vehicles, last week. The German-made UAV was shoot down during the same battle.
Last year, Germany said that it wouldn’t approve any new weapons exports to Saudi Arabia over the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. However, it left open what would happen with already approved contracts.
Hopefully the Houthis will dig in inside southern Saudi Arabia, and offer that as trade for the return of Aden.
Better to target Saudi Aramco, which is also a hit against US.
