The Houthis (Ansar Allah) launched on April 23 a dual missile and drone attack on Israel, challenging the United States’ ongoing military operation in Yemen.
The group launched a hypersonic ballistic missile at a “vital target” near the northern Israeli city of Haifa and a Yafa suicide drone at another target close to the city of Tel Aviv in the center of the country, military spokesman Brigader General Yahya Saree said in a statement, noting that the attack was carried out in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
“Thank God, the missile reached its target, and the interception systems failed to intercept it. This caused fear and panic among the Zionist settlers, with more than two million Zionists heading to shelters,” the spokesman added.
Sirens sounded in Haifa and nearby areas amid the attack. Later, the Israeli military said that the missile was successfully intercepted, without elaborating.
In a statement released earlier in the day, Brig. Gen. Saree announced that Houthi air defenses had shot down a U.S. military MQ-9 Reaper combat drone over the northwestern Yemeni province of Hajjah.
“This was the seventh aircraft of this type that our air defenses have managed to shoot down during the current month of April, and the twenty-second during the Battle of the Promised Victory and the Holy Jihad in support of Gaza,” the spokesman said.
He also said that the group targeted aircraft carriers USS Harry S. Truman and USS Carl Vinson, in addition to other U.S. Navy warships, in the Red and Arab seas with cruise missiles and suicide drones in response to “the American aggression” against Yemen.
The Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees U.S. military operations in the entire Middle East, has not yet addressed these claims.
Since March 18, when the Israeli military resumed its offensive in Gaza, the Houthis have launched more than 20 ballistic missiles and several drones at Israel. Only half of the missiles set off sirens in Israel and were intercepted, while the others fell short.
CENTCOM resumed strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on March 15 on orders from President Donald Trump, who said at the time that the large-scale operation was launched in response to the group’s renewed attacks on Israel-affiliated shipping in the Red Sea.
Over 200 people have been killed since the start of the operation, which is yet to deter the Houthis or degrade their military capabilities.
