The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on September 24 that they had carried out attacks using dozens of ballistic missiles and one-way attack drones against Saudi military sites in the southwestern Jazan region.
In a statement, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said the group launched an operation targeting operations rooms, command-and-control centers, weapons depots and other sites in the al-Tuwal area. He added that the group also targeted missile launch sites at al-Daghareer camp and several Saudi military camps in Jazan.
The spokesman claimed the strikes were “accurate and direct” and resulted in hundreds of casualties for Saudi forces, as well as Yemeni and Sudanese personnel. He also said several Saudi weapons depots were destroyed or set ablaze.
Spokesman of the Saudi-led coalition for Yemen, Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, said earlier that six ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis were intercepted and destroyed over the kingdom, thwarting an attempt to target the cities of Taif and Yanbu.
“The escalation and violations of the Houthi terrorist militia will be dealt with firmly,” he warned, without providing details on whether the interceptions caused any damage.
Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense said that the danger had passed in Mecca, Taif and the northwestern region of Tabuk, following emergency warnings issued earlier for those areas as well as Jeddah and Yanbu. Disturbance in civilian aviation was also reported.
There were also reports in pro-Houthi Yemeni media of dozens of military personnel, including Saudi servicemembers and mercenaries from Sudan, getting killed or wounded in Jazan near the border with Yemen. These claims are yet to be verified, however.
Recent days saw an escalation in Saudi strikes against the Houthis in an apparent attempt by the kingdom to stop the advance of the group, which captured a vast swath of land along Yemen’s western coast in a lighting offensive earlier this month. Civilian casualties, including women and children, were reported. The latest attack was likely carried out in response.
More advance by the Houthis is to be expected despite the increasing pressure by Saudi Arabia. The last few days saw an uptake in fighting in the southwest Yemeni province of Taiz, with undiversified reports of some limited gains by the group. An incursion by the group into Saudi territory, in Jazan for example, is also possibly after the recent strikes.
