The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen launched another ballistic missile at Israel early on March 23, sending thousands in the center of the country to shelters.

There were no reports of casualties or damage in the missile attack, which triggered sirens across central Israel. Operations at Ben Gurion International Airport were also disturbed by the attack. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced later that the missile was intercepted by its air defenses before crossing the country’s borders.

This was the fifth Houthi attack on Israel since the IDF began its renewed offensive against the Hamas Movement in Gaza on March 18.

All the previous attacks were carried out using locally-made Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missiles. The two-stage solid fuel missile that was first unveiled and used by the Houthis in an attack against Israel in mid-September.

The group claims that the missile has a range of over 2,150 kilometers and a top speed equivalent to 16 times the speed of sound.

Hypersonic missiles travel and maneuver at least five times faster than the speed of sound at low altitudes in the atmosphere which makes them extremely difficult to track and intercept. Still, the IDF claims that all the missiles launched recently by the Houthis were intercepted or fallen short of reaching Israel.

The latest missile launch came a day after Houthis accused the United States of attacking the airport in the Red Sea port city of Hodeida. Al-Masirah TV, blaming “American aggression,” said three attacks had targeted the airport. No casualties were reported.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) resumed strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on March 15 on orders from President Donald Trump, who said that the large-scale operation was a response to the group’s renewed attacks on shipping.

Confirming that it was still launching strikes against the Houthis, CENTCOM released on March 23 videos showing some of its recent operations near Yemen.

U.S. strikes have so far claimed the lives of some 53, including commanders of the Houthis and civilians. However, the Houthis remain undeterred and their military capabilities appear to be as active as before.
