The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen vowed on November 30 to resume attacks on Israeli territory and target Israeli owned or operated ships in the Red Sea, if Israel resumes its war on the Palestinian enclave of Gaza Strip.
“We confirm our full readiness to resume military operations against the Israeli enemy if it decides to resume its aggression against Gaza,” Houthi spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sari said in a statement.
The Houthi forces “will not hesitate to expand attacks against the Israeli entity to include targets that Israel may not expect on land or at sea,” the spokesman said.
“We continue to prevent Israeli ships in the Red Sea and we will take further measures to ensure the full implementation of this decision,” he added.
The Houthis, who control a large part of Yemen and maintain a large arsenal of missiles and drones, are part of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” which is backed by Iran and opposes Israel.
After the breakout of the war in Gaza, the Houthis launched several missile and drone attacks at targets in Israel. It also seized an Israeli-owned ship that was sailing towards the Bab al-Mandab Strait and allegedly attacked another with a drone in the Indian Ocean.
In addition, the group shot down a combat drone of the United States military that was allegedly operating off Yemen’s western coast in support of Israel.
Ignoring the Houthis’ warning, the ceasefire in Gaza ended on December 1 and Israel resumed military operations against the Hamas Movement and other armed factions in Gaza. Talks are currently underway to renew the ceasefire. The Houthis could resume attacks against Israel if the talks fail.
