A coalition of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Turkish-backed factions and al-Qaeda-affiliated groups announced the beginning of a new large-scale attack on government-held areas in the northern Hama countryside in the afternoon of June 6.

The new attack was named after Mu’tasim Bellah al-Madani, a prominent Saudi figure of al-Qaeda, who was killed by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in northern Hama last month.

Pro-government sources said that attack is aimed at capturing the Christian town of Mahardah. Heavy clashes are reportedly taking place in the villages of Jibeen and Tell Meleh north of the town, as the SAA is working to repel the attack.

HTS’s news network, Iba’a, and the media office of the National Front for Liberation (NFL) released several photos of terrorists participating in the attack. The photos showed several Turkish-supplied weapons such as the HAR-66 anti-tank weapon and a Panthera F9 armored personnel carrier (APC).

The last two month witnessed several similar attacks by the HTS and its allies. However, the SAA with support from the Russian Aerospace Forces was able to repel them all.
