On July 18, the al-Fateh al-Mubeen Operations Room, the largest military formation in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, placed its militants on high alert.
The information was revealed by Taher al-Omar, a propagandist of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Al-Omar didn’t provide any further details on the issue.
Many al-Qaeda factions and Turkish-backed groups operate under the banner of the al-Fateh al-Mubeen Operations Room, which is led by HTS. The operations room coordinates defensive and offensive operations on all frontlines in Greater Idlib.
A few hours after placing their militants on high alert, al-Fateh al-Mubeen factions shelled the government-held towns of Kafr Nabl, Hantoteen, Khan Assubul, Dadikh, al-Hamidiah and Jarada in the southern Idlib countryside. No casualties or material losses were reported.
The shelling represents a violation of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey on March 5 last year.
The al-Fateh al-Mubeen Operations Rooms was responsible for most recent ceasefire violations in Greater Idlib. Its factions were reportedly behind the last rocket attack on Aleppo city.
The HTS-led operations room appears to be planning to step up its attacks on Syrian government forces. The operations room may be even preparing a ground attack.
