On the night of February 12, Israel launched massive airstrikes on the crowded city of Rafah in the south of Gaza Strip, where more than a million displaced Palestinians have fled. According to the latest reports, the deaths toll from Israeli bombing has already exceeded 100 people, while more than 230 others were wounded.
The Israeli military claimed early Monday that it had conducted a “wave of attacks” on Rafah. According to the official report, the airstrikes on some “quality targets” were over at about 3 a.m. local time.

The Israeli military later declared that the strikes ”coincided” with a joint operation by the Israel Defence Force (IDF), Israel’s domestic Shin Bet security service and the Special Police Unit in Rafah aimed to release two Israeli hostages. Fernando Simon Marman, 60, and Louis Hare, 70, who were captured by Palestinian fighters during the October 7 attack on Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak. As a result of the Israeli operation last night, they were taken back to Israel. According to the Israeli military, the hostages were being held on the second floor of a building that was breached with an explosive charge during the raid, which saw heavy exchanges of gunfire with surrounding buildings. Now, they are in good medical condition, and were transferred for medical examination at the Sheba Tel Hashomer hospital.
The Israeli military said the airstrikes on Rafah coincided with the raid to allow its forces to be extracted. Thus, Israel confirmed that hundreds of Palestinians were killed and wounded to secure the operation of the Israeli special forces, which could not secure their withdrawal in any other humane way.
Israeli warplanes, tanks and ships reportedly took part in the attack on Rafah. According to some estimates, there are about 1.4 million people in the city, about half of the total population of Gaza.
The Al-Shabura quarter in Rafah, where the largest number of refugees took shelter, was heavily bombed. The local reports confirmed destruction of at least two mosques and several residential buildings.
The strikes resulted in heavy civilian casualties. Dozens of children were killed and wounded. The director of the Abu Yusef al-Najara hospital said that the capacity of medical facilities in Rafah cannot withstand such a large number of victims.
Hamas declared that the attack on Rafah was a continuation of a “genocidal war” and forced displacement attempts Israel has waged against the Palestinian people. The day before, Hamas leader warned that any Israeli ground offensive in Rafah would “blow up” the hostage-exchange negotiations.
Egypt was also not pleased by Israeli attack on the border city. Egyptian politicians called the bombing “crossing all borders” and “blatant ignoring of Egypt’s interests.” Since the beginning of the Israeli operations in the Palestinian enclave, the population of the city of Rafah located on the southern border of the Gaza Strip increased more than 10 times, posing the greater threat to the security of the Egyptian borders. The Egyptian authorities are concerned that refugee flows may break through the border and pour into Egypt.
“Egypt called for the necessity of uniting all international and regional efforts to prevent the targeting of the Palestinian city of Rafah,” Egyptian foreign ministry claimed on February 11.
Cairo warned Israel of the consequences if the IDF launches an operation in Rafah, threatening Israel to break the Camp David Accords signed back in 1979. Egypt may respond with severance of all diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv.
At the moment, Cairo continues to strengthen the border fences, and has also transferred tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to the border area.

Israel’s main allies, including the United States and Britain, have publicly warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to go ahead with a plan to send troops into Rafah. Joe Biden told that Israel should not launch a military operation in Rafah without a credible plan to ensure the safety of the roughly 1 million people sheltering there, the White House said. However, it seems that they gave a green light to the bombing of the city.
Tel Aviv spat on the interests of Egypt and moved on to bombing the densely populated and overcrowded refugee center. Netanyahu’s office has said that it had ordered the military to develop a plan to evacuate Rafah and destroy four Hamas battalions it says are deployed there. So far, any humanitarian efforts to save the lives of civilians are yet to be taken.
The United Nations has warned that the Palestinians there are running low on food, clean water and medicine, and that a ground assault would risk exacerbating a catastrophe that is already unfolding. Any operations in Rafah, including strikes, would stop the delivery of humanitarian supplies to the Palestinian enclave.
Tel Aviv brazenly ignores the decision of the UN court and does not make any efforts to stop the genocide of the Palestinian population.
