The hunt for ISIS cells in southern Syria has reportedly reached the town of al-Yadudah in the western countryside of Daraa.
Local leaders in al-Yadudah were warned of ISIS presence in their town by Brigadier General Louay al-Ali, head of the Military Intelligence Division (MID) branch in Daraa, during a meeting that was held on October 24. The next day, the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Division, the MID and a pro-government armed group deployed a large, heavily armed force in the outskirts of al-Yadudah to prevent any terrorists from fleeing the town.
Al-Yadudah’s locals began cooperating on October 27. Local fighters launched an operation in the town to document the names of foreigners and collect information on suspected ISIS members. Government forces didn’t intervene and no clashes were reported.
Government forces may launch a full-on security operation against ISIS cells in al-Yadudah in cooperation with the locals very soon.
A similar operation was conducted in the town of Tafas in August. During the operation, some of ISIS top leaders in southern Syria were killed. Earlier this month, another operation took place in the town of Jasim. At least 20 terrorists were killed there.
Some of the terrorists who managed to flee from Tafas and Jassim may be hiding now in al-Yadudah, where ISIS presence was reported in the past.
The recent operations indicate that Syria is determined to eliminate ISIS presence in the southern region. Daraa will likely witness more operations against the terrorist group’s cells before the end of the year.
