On June 27, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched what it described as a “pinpoint operation” against the Hamas Movement in the northern Gaza Strip.
The operation began with intense airstrikes and the IDF ordering thousands of Palestinians to evacuate eastern neighborhoods of Gaza City.
“To all residents and displaced people in the Shejaiya area, the new neighborhoods, Turkmen, and Al-Tuffah, for your safety, you must evacuate immediately south on Salah al-Din Street to the humanitarian zone,” IDF spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avichay Adraee said in a statement.
The operation was launched by the 98th Division following intelligence information on Hamas fighters and infrastructure in the area, the IDF said in a statement released on June 28.
The IDF said that the division’s 7th Armored Brigade pushed into the Shejaiya area one June 27, and overnight, the Paratroopers Brigade began to raid sites in the neighborhood. Dozens of Hamas sites were struck from the air as the ground forces pushed in, it added. .
In separate “significant” strikes in northern Gaza, the IDF said it killed dozens of fighters who were held up in a school and other facilities of the UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
Also overnight, the IDF said that a fighter jet struck a Hamas fighter in a building in central Gaza’s Deir al Balah, within the Israeli designated “humanitarian zone.”
The IDF faced some serious resistance in Shejaiya. The al-Quds Brigade, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, released video footage showing an attack on a Merkava main battle tank with an explosive device in the area. The tank was damaged as a result of the attack.
Meanwhile, in southern Gaza more Israeli losses were reported. On June 28, the IDF admitted that a soldier from the Nahal Infantry Brigade’s 931st Battalion was killed in a sniper attack in the Rafah area. The attack was claimed by Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassad Brigades.
The soldier’s death brought the toll of slain Israeli troops in the ground operations in Gaza and along its border to 316. More than 1,977 others have been reportedly wounded.
On Palestinian side, the death toll from the Israeli war has reached 37,765 with more than 86,429 others wounded, according to the latest update by the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.
The new IDF operation in northern Gaza shows that Israel is still determined to go on with its bloody war on the Strip despite failing to achieve any of its objectives and taking some serious losses. A ceasefire remains highly unlikely, at least for the time being.
