This was the second attack on government forces in al-Raqqa this week. Three days earlier, Lt. Col. Ahmed Mohamed, commander of the Air Force Intelligence Directorate (AFID) detachment in the town of Dibsi ‘Afnan, was assassinated in western Raqqa.

ISIS remnants are known to operate in southwestern Raqqa. Nevertheless, the group has not claimed responsibility for any of the recent attacks, yet. More attacks could target government forces in the southern and western Raqqa countryside, if necessary precautions are not taken.
