Up until recently the US would sail up to a target nation and bombard them into submission, it used to be called gunboat diplomacy. But the advent of carrier killer missiles has left the US navy without anything to do. Now that China has the ability to use gunboat diplomacy and the US doesn’t have any carrier killer missiles, I wonder if the US will get into a naval battle, there hasn’t been one since the battle of Jutland.

Yes and there are also other minor things like shifting of the Indian ocean trade route into the Arctic Sea, shortening the trade route thousands of miles. US has weak influence in the North Sea and so will leave the navy less to do in terms of claiming trade protection and freedom of navigation. After all the US navy is by far the most important arm of the military.

So many new ships, it’s an awesome sight.

Naval strategy is build strategy. The Chinese build more then the US and have the capacity to build more at short notice. In that sense we have a reversal of the roles that the US and Japan had at the start of WW2. The USN is bigger then the PLAN and on paper could afford to sink the entire Chinese navy in a 1 on 1 exchange, the Chinese would still recover more quickly while the USN would be a shadow of its former self. Plus the PLAN has the advantage of being concentrated in one theater of operations while the USN has to spread its attention to many.

Just like the British navy had during it’s role of world empire. They had to design ships to deploy them overseas, always making compromises between armor, speed, weaponry and crew/infantry complement. On paper they were the largest but spread out. Of course today those factors are not important as we have naval nuclear reactors and long range diesels and turbines and not naval guns as weapons.
