In Photos: Syrian Army Eliminates Group Of Terrorists In Northern Hama

On January 13, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) foiled a new infiltration attempt by radical militants in the northern Hama countryside, according to Syrian pro-government sources.

In details, a group of terrorists advanced from its positions in the opposition-held town of Kafr Zita at the early hours of the morning in an attempt to launch an attack on nearby positions of the SAA. However, the army detected the group with a thermal surveillance system and targeted it with what appears to be guided munitions. Most of the attackers were killed.

Syrian opposition activists revealed that the failed attack was carried out by the Special Forces of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) [the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria]. However, the radical group has not confirmed this yet, likely to cover its loses.

The failed attack is a major violation of the Russian-Turkish demilitarization zone agreement, which was reached last September. Under the agreement, the militants are not allowed to be deployed in the zone around the governorate of Idlib, which covers Hama.

Recently, the SAA began to use advanced weapons systems such as armed drones, anti-tank guided missiles and cluster rockets in response to the repeated violations of the demilitarized zone agreement. This led to casualties among the militants, who are yet to obey the agreement.
