On March 27, the Syrian National Defense Forces (NDF) launched a new combing operation in the western Deir Ezzor countryside. The operation is aimed at clearing the region from mines and improvised-explosive devises (IEDs) and neutralizing any remaining cells of ISIS there.
The NDF’s media office said that the operation will cover the countryside of the towns of Kobajjep and Huribishah. Both towns are located on an imortant highway linking the city center of Deir Ezzor with the historical city of Palmyra in the eastern Homs countryside.
In the last few months, ISIS cells carried out a series of attacks against Syrian troops deployed on Deir Ezzor-Palmyra highway. Recently, the Ministry of Defense of Russia revealed the terrorist group killed three Russian service members in an ambush south of the highway.
Most of these terrorist attacks were launched from the last ISIS stronghold in the Homs desert, which lays between western Deir Ezzor and eastern Homs. Hundreds of highly experienced, well-armed terrorists are reportedly hiding there.
The NDF’s new operation will likely limit ISIS capability to launch attacks on the Deir Ezzor-Palmyra highway. However, the terrorist group will remain a threat as long as it maintains presence in the Homs desert.
