The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced on October 11 that its Air Defense Force had shot down an Armenian drone.
In a brief statement published on Twitter, the Azerbaijani MoD said the Armenian drone was shot down near the central city of Mingachevir.
The Azerbaijani MoD backed its claims with a video documenting the incident. The video was taken in the command cabin of a S-125-2TM “Pechora-2TM” medium range air-defense system.
At least two Pechora-2TM are known to be in service with the Azerbaijani Air Defense Force. The system is an upgraded version of the original Soviet S-125.
The upgrade, which is meant to enhance the system’s performance against small aerial targets, was developed by Belarus’ Tetraedr. The system’s maximum range is 35 km.
The type of the downed drone was not identified by the Azerbaijani MoD. The Armenian military operates several domestically-made drones, such as the ARMI-55M. Several drones of this type were shot down by Azerbaijan over the last few years.
Despite the presence of a vailed evidence, the Azerbaijani MoD claims remain questionable. The country made several false accusations against Armenia before.
