The Russian military and the armed forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) continue to destroy advanced weapons systems supplied to Ukrainian by the United States and other NATO members.
On September 23, the DPR battalion Kaskad released footage of artillery strikes targeting a US-made AN/TPQ-50 of Kiev forces. The footage shows several artillery shells landing a just meters away from the radar, which was reportedly destroyed.
The SRCTec AN/TPQ-50 is a highly mobile counter-battery, target acquisition radar that was designed to provides 360 azimuth coverage. It can automatically detect, classify, track and locate points of origin of projectiles fired from mortar, artillery and rocket systems.
The radar is typically mounted on a vehicle, like the HMMWV [High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle], but can be also operated in the tripod-mounted configuration.
The AN/TPQ-50 can detect mortars from five to ten kilometers, artillery shells from one to ten kilometers and rockets from one to ten kilometers.
The US supplied several AN/TPQ-50 systems to Ukraine following the outbreak of the war in Donbass in 2014. Kiev forces received more counter-battery radars of different types form the US and other NATO countries after the start of the Russian special military operation last February.
The Russian military and the armed forces of the DPR and LPR have already destroyed, damaged or captured several NATO-supplied counter-battery radars. These radars didn’t have any real impact on the battlefield. Kiev forces as still outgunned by the Russian artillery.
