The Russian Aerospace Forces used FAB-3000 bombs equipped with a UMPK [Russian: УМПК; Унифицированный модуль планирования и коррекции, Unified gliding and correction module] kits to attack two Ukrainian targets in the Dnepropetrovsk direction on August 3.
The first bomb hit a building where a Ukrainian air defense unit was deployed close to the settlement of Novoselovka, while the second targeted a bridge used by Kiev forces to move military supplies. The massive bombs obliterated both targets.
The FAB-3000, which weighs around three tons with some 1,4 tons of explosives, can hit targets located as far as 80 kilometers away when equipped with a UMPK kit, which also provides guidance via a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system.
It’s worth noting that the UMPK was originally developed by Russia’s Bazalt Design Bureau for FAB-500 bombs, which weigh six times less than the FAB-3000.
While UMPK-equipped bombs can be employed by most warplanes in service with the VKS, the FAB-3000 has been only spotted loaded on Su-34 fighter bombers so far.
The heavy strikes on Dnepropetrovsk came as Denis Pushilin, head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, reported an advance by the Russian military in this direction.
“As for the Velikaya Novoselka area: we see our units improving their positions. They are already advancing in the Dnepropetrovsk Region,” he said in a video address posted on his Telegram channel.
The latest strikes may be the beginning of more intense Russian operations in Dnepropetrovsk. Kiev forces continue to fall back in the Donetsk direction, thus the Russian military may be preparing to take advantage of any sudden Ukrainian collapse.
