On December 16, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, released video footage of a recent attack by its fighters against a newly-established position of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the town of Juhor al-Dik in the center of the Gaza Strip
The footage shows a small group of fighters armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades storming the highly-fortified position in bare feet. The fighters then gun down an Israeli soldier who was guarding the position and seize his rifle.
Ten Israeli troops were allegedly killed or wounded in the daring hit and run attack. The IDF has not commented on the footage yet.
The IDF has lost a total of 121 troops since the start of ground operations in Gaza. The death of the last two soldiers, one from the Navy’s elite Shayetet 13 commando unit and another the 55th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade’s 6623rd Battalion, were announced on December 17.
In addition, more than 600 Israeli troops have been wounded while taking part in ground operations. Some of them are reportedly still in a life-threatening condition.
The first phase of the IDF’s ground operations, which began on October 27, targeted northern Gaza. IDF troops occupied much of Gaza City, including the beach front, and established a presence in the city of Beit Lahia. As a result, the north was isolated.
Israel expanded ground operations in the outskirts of Gaza City, mainly in the neighborhood of Shejaiya, and launched an offensive in the city of Khan Yunis in the southern part of the Strip after the week-long ceasefire in Gaza ended on December 1.
Overall, the IDF made very few gains in Gaza in the last two weeks. Meanwhile, Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in the Strip are improving their tactics.
