On January 14, head of the Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin came to the front line to award the guys who participated in the Soledar operation with medals. He commented on the operation in Soledar in his short interview:
I came here to give medals to the guys who took Soledar. This is the man who commanded the capture of Soledar, who took it without chewing snot in two weeks. Before that nothing had happened there for a long time.

They have air defense which shot down a huge number of enemy aircrafts; they have artillery of all calibers, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, assault units which in fact have no equal, and the most importantly – they have a management system, a perfectly well-established management system of the Wagner PMC, where everybody can be heard, and everyone can say their opinion. Our conversations always end with “what else is there to think about and what else is needed to complete the tasks? Those who are on the ground, the commanders consult with the fighters, and the PMC leadership consults with the commanders.
If a decision is made, once the decision is made, all the tasks are carried out, no one can give a damn. The brutal discipline that gives us these opportunities, that is why the Wagner PMC went forward and will go forward! This, in fact, is the answer to all the many questions from journalists these days.

The important question is why does the russian armed forces try to cut a slice of this management system and use it themselves.
I do not think the fact that mercenarys have priviledged access to planes and good arms and vehicles is a good thing. The same situation exists in syria were the tiger forces were the only well equiped some years ago. Not sure if this is still the case.
Whatever Wagner is, as far as its relationship to the Russian state, remains unclear. However there is clearly a professional officer corps and professional NCO’s. Democracies with mass all-volunteer armies are a nice notion, but we saw how that turned out in WW1 and 2. Assaults have always required professional soldiers. Even the Germans had all manner of problems with Case White in 1939 when they brought a mass army to bear on the Poles. Mercenaries are a very dangerous proposition in any society, and I remain extremely curious as to the exact nature of the relationship of Wagner to the Russian state. The Russians could try to transpose Wagner’s “system”, but I don’t see a strong likelihood of success with a mass conscript force.
