Indian warships have test fired several BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles in the Arabian Sea amid rising tensions with Pakistan.

“Indian Navy Ships undertook successful multiple anti-ship firings to revalidate and demonstrate readiness of platforms, systems, and crew for long-range precision offensive strike. Indian Navy stands combat-ready, credible, and future-ready in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests Anytime Anywhere Anyhow,” said the Indian Navy in a post to the X social network.

Video footage released by the navy showed the missiles being fired from Kolkata-class destroyers, as well as Nilgiri and Krivak-class frigates.

BrahMos was jointly developed by the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Russian Federation’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya on the basis of the P-800 Oniks. The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.

Just like the Russian-made Oniks, the BrahMos can reach a speed of up to Mach 3 with the range of its latest version reaching over 800 kilometers. Upon approaching its target, the missile is capable of flying as low as 3-10 meters to avoid detection.

The BrahMos relies on a complex guidance system building around a satellite-aided inertial navigation system and an active radar homing seeker. While it was mainly designed to engage water-born targets, it can strike ground-based targets as effectively.

The advanced missile can be launched from attack submarines, warships, warplanes or ground-based transporter erector launchers.

The Indian missile firings were clearly meant as a message to Pakistan. Tensions between the two have been on the rise since the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which left 26 Indian civilians dead.

Pakistan denied any involvement in the terrorist attack, which was claimed by The Resistance Front. Still, India expelled Pakistani diplomats, closing border crossings, and went as far as halting a vital water-sharing agreement for the first time ever.

Since the attack, several rounds of clashes have been reported along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, with neither side reporting casualties.
