On August 22, Iran unveiled an advanced combat drone dubbed Mohajer-10 with an operational range of at least 2,000 kilometers.
The new drone was showcased at an exhibition of the latest achievements of the country’s defense industry in the presence of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
The Mohajer 10 can fly for as much as 24 hours, rise to an altitude of seven kilometers and reach speeds of up to 210 kilometers per hour. It has an operational weight of 300 kilograms, three times as much as the smaller Mohajer-6. In addition, the drone is equipped with reconnaissance and electronic warfare systems.
Iranian state media released video footage of the Mohajer 10 drone that bears some resemblance to the American MQ-9 Reaper combat drone. The footage shows the aircraft successfully taking off and landing on a runway. It also demonstrates several types of precision-guided missiles and bombs that the drone can carry.
The unveiling of the new drone comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz.
Last July, the United States deployed F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, along with several warships and additional marines to the Middle East, in order to deter Iranian naval forces who seized two tankers in the gulf earlier this year. The IRGC responded by holding a series of naval drills this month.
