In Video: Iranian Helicopter Confronts U.S. Destroyer In Gulf Of Oman

File image.

A helicopter of the Iranian military confronted a United States destroyer in the Gulf of Oman today, warning it to stay out of waters claimed by Tehran, Iranian state TV reported on July 23.

The television said that the helicopter flew over the USS Fitzgerald, an Arleigh Burke-class missile destroyer, at about 10 a.m. local time after the vessel “attempted to approach the waters under the supervision” of Iran.

The destroyer issued threats of its own, the broadcaster claims, but “the Iranian pilot… reiterated the warning to stay away from Iranian waters,” forcing the U.S. warship to “give in” and alter its course, according to the report.

Footage aired by the television shows USS Fitzgerald from the window of the helicopter as the pilot calls on the warship to “change course” and avoid approaching Iranian territorial waters.

The incident was the first traction between the Iranian and U.S. militaries since the latter joined an attack by Israel on the Islamic Republic last month and struck three key nuclear sites. The Iranian responded at the time by launching missiles at the U.S. Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

The U.S. bolstered its forces in the Middle East, especially close to Iran’s border, amidst the war, which started on July 13. It is unclear if any of the reinforcements have been withdrawn since a ceasefire came into effect on July 24.

Tensions between Iran and Israel remain high. A report published by The New York Times on July 22 revealed that Israel might be behind a series of blasts that rocked the Islamic Republic. The series began after the end of the 12-day war.

Statements coming out from Israel also suggest that another attack on Iran could be behind the corner. Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on July 22 that a renewed campaign against the Islamic Republic was a possibility.

Yes

the us navy is so powerful because it can supply its ships from far away. a destroyer doesn’t travel infinitely far. it is always accompanied by supply ships. the russian navy or the chinese navy is not as powerful as the us navy. be realistic and stop dreaming.

Obsolete Stars and Stripes!

talk to the houthis about the us navy being so powerful.

Tiger

still, he was not wrong and does not deserve the downvotes.

Thraxite

he is wrong, because the russian and chinese navies are focused. the us is spread all over the globe and can be attacked anywhere. therefore it is spread thin and vulnerable to a quick large naval strike or blockade. as soon as your ships return for the threat the entire “front” is gone.

lion tamer

they can only operate there because quisling stooges like bahrain and qatar give them bases there.

StS

that’s kind of evidence that the chinese and russian navy are used for defense and the us navy is useful for offense…

Clint

the us navy of sitting ducks🤮

Scott Ritter

wow that super duper navy destroyer did a super duper retreat.

Yes

don’t be so naive. that destroyer could have easily shot down the helicopter, and the helicopter would have been completely powerless against it. the helicopter has nothing to defend itself against, and the destroyer is armed with around 30 anti-aircraft missiles and a powerful radar. it wasn’t a retreat; it was either a projection of power or a desperate attempt by the iranians to appear powerful.

Scott Ritter

yes yes, trading one of those destroyers for an old chopper wouldn’t be so cost effective would it? i’m sure dozens of anti ship missiles were already ready to snipe that destroyer and they knew it.

Clint

that destroyor could’ve been easily sunk with one missile. they’re sitting ducks.

SovietRus´

conventional navies (with exception of ssbns and ssgns) became obsolete in modern warfare… any country with ash/asw missiles or loitering drones/munitions could destroy ships like that easily (unfortunately the same is true for russia) russia should invest more in subs, less in surface targets aka “ships”… the war against ukros and the houthis beating of 2 us carrier groups were the final warning!

Tiger
