Late on August 26, a large blast rocked a base of the Turkish military near the village of al-Euyun in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.
Video footage that surfaced on social media showed a large fire and secondary explosions at the base. Casualties were reported.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition monitoring group, speculated that the blast was the result of an attack by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Other news sources alleged that an ammunition depot within the Turkish base was targeted with a drone.
The Turkish military occupies vast parts of Syria’s northern and eastern regions. Dozens of Turkish bases are located in the northern Aleppo countryside, northern Raqqa countryside and the northern countryside of al-Hasakah.
In recent weeks, Turkey stepped up drone strikes against the SDF and its affiliates. A civilian was killed and another was wounded in the most recent strike, which targeted a van carrying journalists in the northern al-Hasakah countryside on August 23.
It is possible that the SDF attacked al-Euyun base in response to recent Turkish drone strikes. This could lead to a dangerous escalation by Turkey.
