On December 16, the Russian Defense Ministry’s Zvezda TV released a video of the recent tests of the newest 2S38 Derivatsiya anti-aircraft artillery system. The 2S38 Derivatsiya-PVO is made on the basis of the BMP-3 chassis and armed with a 57-mm automatic anti-aircraft gun. The system is designed to defeat unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, air-to-ground missiles, tactical aviation jets and military helicopters. It’s also capable of intercepting rockets launched by rocket and misisle artillery systems.
Would have been more impressive if they used a 57mm seven-barrel rotary cannon. I bet the Houthis could make one.
I wonder if it can be adapted to the BMD-4M chassis?
My understanding is this is a drop in system and can be fitted on nearly anything. Boomerang will get this as well as BMD-4M.
You’re probably right about that. Hopefully something wouldn’t break on landing by parachute. It would be interesting if the designers manage to place the 9M337 Sosna-R on the BMD-4M. The BMP-3 shares 80% commonality with the BMD-4, so if the Sosna-R air defence system can’t be fitted onto the BMD-4M, the BMP-3 would be a better option from the perspective of military logistics than the MT-LB.

Exactly “in missile and radar technology” (specially in anti-aircraft anti-missile systems) Russia by far excels US not to mention Israel. They are far above with S-350, S-400 not to mention S-500 around the corner. This 57mm canon has the same range (4-5km up and 6km distance) as man-pads have and each round is much cheaper than missiles any man-pad uses. The canon is firing 120 rounds per minute. That is formidable fire power that can take down any number of lower flying aircraft including “stealth” flying brick called F-35.

With the rapid fire cannon, it would take out a MBT’s ability to attack but it wouldn’t destroy it. Sensors and optics will not function after a salvo hit of 57mm HE.

First. If the IDF is so powerful how come they’ve been attacking Iranian forces around Damascus over and over and over for more than a year …. every time showing sat images of destroyed building yet the iranians are still there, still have their missiles and can land missile laden aircraft in Damascus whenever they please.
Second if the Saudi’s had “self propelled air defence cannons” like the Pantsir their oil installations would not have been vulnerable to drone and cruise missile attacks. Keep thinking these weapons are obsolete …. it’s your funeral.

Russia made a deal with Israel to not sell advanced aircraft, advanced anti-aircraft technology, and tactical ballistic missiles like Iskander-M to any of Israel’s regional enemies in return for Israel refusing to sell advanced military tech to Georgia and Ukraine.
SHORADs (short-range air defence) aren’t intended for high-altitude air interception. Russia made a deal with Israel to not any sell advanced aircraft, advanced anti-aircraft technology, or tactical ballistic missiles like Alexander/Iskander-M to any of Israel’s regional enemies in return for Israel refusing to sell advanced military tech to Georgia and Ukraine.

Because those were high-altitude airstrikes beyond the range of SHORADs.
I don’t get how this thing is suppose to shoot down fast-flying drones and munitions, tiny targets. It would need to be wholly automated, have very advanced AI and optics/detection system, and a much faster firing weapon.
Russians have discovered fewer but larger rounds are more effective. They had the 4 barreled ZSU. Impressive but the 2 barreled Tunguska and then Pantsir. This is the next evolution.
