Why would Russia want to take Ukrainian territory with ethnic Ukrainians who hate Russians?; such a scenario does not make any sense, and Russia could care less about West Ukrainians and has no desire to be confronted with an endless NATO-fuelled guerilla war in the West.

Brian Berletic (the New Atlas) has a very good video explaining how keeping these bridges is of strategic value. If the Russians were losing, then criticism might be warranted from armchair generals. But they are not, they are able to preserve their best weaponry just in case NATO gets stupid and keeping their casualties low generates higher morale. US soldiers suffer PTSD from actions they were ordered to take, only later to realize what they were forced to do against innocent people was criminal. Do Russian soldiers need to suffer the same fate? No.
I also watched his view and he was pretty right. War of Attrition involves a lot of factors and one of them is a logistic nightmare. It involves long routes, huge fuel consumption and fatigue.You beat your enemy by exhausting them with any mean including these factors

Even pro-Ukrainian Balkan Mapping on youtube is showing a ring of fire of 30 to 100 rockets in Ukrainian territory, compared to one to five hitting in Russian territory.

The Nazis of 81-st Airmobile Brigade of the AFU that operate in Belogorovka (Lugansk People’s Republic) refused to subordinate to the command and to fulfill combat tasks due to large casualties and low morale. The Right Sektor militants sent to Belogorovka from one of the Einsatzgruppen executed 5 Ukrainian servicemen by shooting in the head to impose order and to intimidate the Brigade’s personnel.
