On December 27, a large explosion rocked a convoy carrying supplies for the U.S.-led coalition in the central Iraqi province of Babylon.
An Iraqi security source told the Alsumaria News TV that the convoy was targeted with an improvised explosive device, without providing any additional details. No human losses were reported as a result of the attack.
According to the Sabereen News Telegram channel, a newly-formed faction known as “Saryat Qasim al-Jabbarin” [The Breaker of Titans Company] claimed responsibility for the attack. The Telegram channel, which is affiliated with Iraqi Shiite armed groups, shared a video of the attack. The short video shows a large explosion hitting a convoy of supply trucks.
This was the fifth supply convoy of the U.S.-led coalition to be attacked in Iraq in the last eight days. The four previous attacks took place in the country’s southern provinces. During the same period, Baghdad’s Green Zone, which hosts the U.S. diplomatic mission, was struck with at least eight rockets.
These attacks are a part of a military campaign launched by Iranian-allied Shiite groups to expel U.S. force from Iraq. The campaign is a response to the January 3 U.S. drone strike on Baghdad International Airport that claimed the lives of Iran’s Quds Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of the Popular Mobilization Units.
According to a several recent reports, the U.S. is still determined to respond to any attack that would lead to casualties among its troops in Iraq.
