Russia continues the rearmament of its strategic forces with the Avangard hypersonic missile system in the Orenburg region. On December 16, the Russian Defense Ministry released a video showing how its newest intercontinental ballistic missile with the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle was installed in a silo launcher.

Russia Revealed Look Of Avangard Hypersonic Missile System (Video):

The Avangard Hypersonic Glide Vehicle:

The development of a future ICBM with a brand-new payload type in the form of a gliding vehicle was the real technological breakthrough. The testing of Avangard has been successfully concluded. According to available information, Avangard can reach the top speed of Mach 20 and is one of the possible payload options for Sarmat.

The warhead can fly in dense layers of the atmosphere over intercontinental distances, while performing evasive dog-legs both horizontally (up to several thousand kilometers) and vertically. Specialists assess that the Avangard has not only an aerodynamic control system but also a propulsion system to be able to perform such maneuvers.

In spite of flying in a plasma cloud, the warhead can receive signals from its command center. It used to be an impossible task, since plasma blocks radio waves. Another challenge that was successfully overcome was the problem of heat insulation. It cannot be ruled out that the Avangard uses new generation high-temperature ceramic composites that use silicon carbide, capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 2,000 C. By mid-March it was announced that the first Avangard carriers would become the UR-100N UTTKh (SS-19 Stiletto) ICBMs that will most likely become part of the RS-24 Yars strategic missile system. About 30 of these missiles were delivered from Ukraine in the early ‘00s to cover natural gas debts. After the Soviet break-up, they were stored un-fueled. Once Sarmat is adopted, it too will carry Avangard warheads. The Russian MOD already signed a contract for serial delivery of Avangards, and they will enter line service in the near future.

NEW Kalashnikov model AKV-521: WORK IN PROGRESS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAHAgXi7ENo&feature=emb_rel_end

Steve Standley

this is a rifle made for the public. It’s not an improvement over the AK-12, which is Kalashnikov’s newest military rifle. It DOES feature an upper/lower so that calibers can be swapped, however. If they want to improve the AK-12, they need to move to something like the AK-12 chambered in 6.5 Grendel. Making the AK modular, however, is a good idea, but for now i don’t think this is contemplated for the Russian army.

thank you.

Here is a new SPAAG designed to bring down drones as well. 57mm autocannon with targeted air bursting ammo; perfect for drone swarms: the 2S38 D https://youtu.be/aSIDMrsw_fE

Steve Standley

this 57mm autocannon is to be mounted on other afvs in place of the 30mm 2A72, for instance. This is the next autocannon to be mounted on Terminators. This gun is definitely the final and best answer to an AFV arms race between NATO and Russia. The nato answer? a necked-out 30mm shell to make a 50mm bushmaster that isn’t half as good as this gun. this 57mm autocannon is definitely a win for the Russians, and probably the most versatile gun on the battlefield: 12km range, 120 rpm, all kinds of rounds, much longer armor piercing range for AFVs than anything NATO has currently or in development.

Cromwell

Looks quite light,how many RPM?

It looks like identical to AK-12 since among improvements to previous newer models (like AK-12) They do not mention the rate of fire as an improvement. It is still working prototype though so everything is possible

Here from one article on AKV-521: …the 500 Series AK” [yes – this means, we’ll be seeing the AK-521 in 7,62х39, 5,56х45, .308 Win, etc.] will have the following features: Firstly, the gun will feature an unbreakable link between the optics binding and the barrel, whether during operation or when taking the gun apart for maintenance. Secondly, the 500 series setup will feature a separate upper and lower receiver. All moving parts, which bear the most load, will be made of metal, while all the strategic ones will be fashioned out of polymers. This solution allows the designers to reduce weight, increase ergonomics, as well as precision. The latter is achieved, among other things, thanks to a protruding barrel that doesn’t join with the forend, while the 1913-MIL-STD Picatinny rail continues along the barrel, right up to the end of the forend. Such construction rids the AK of a very serious drawback – its barrel lid vibrating when firing, which used to lead to the gradual misalignment of optics. Together with a “free” barrel architecture should vastly increase shooting accuracy.

Moreover, photos of the rifle during operation reveal that the engineers have swapped out the traditional Kalashnikov selective fire mechanism for one normally seen on the American M-4 and HK416. This elegant little solution has allowed to increase ergonomics by several orders of magnitude, increasing the firing speed of the new 500 series.

The bolt carrier, piston and spring, meanwhile, have remained as they were. The same can apparently be said of the trigger mechanism. “Visually, it seems that the new AKV-521 is, first and foremost, a reworked receiver. This was, evidently, an attempt to replicate the HK416’s modular structure, which itself was a comprehensive update to the existing M-4 and M-16 rifles used by NATO armies,” says military analyst Dmitry Safonov. Such a module is actually cheaper to make than a full-fledged gun. Moreover, it improves ergonomics and shooting reliability, as well as allowing to swap out old moving parts for new ones. Not to mention the fact that the military gets to use a familiar system.

Steve Standley

That would be great if Russian military adopted the AKV-521 modular upper/lower concept.

HiaNd

Agree.

Steve Standley

Russian AKs and most machine guns almost universally fire at about 600 rounds per minute. not saying the 521 series does, but almost all of the past rifles and most machine guns are about 600 rounds per minute.

While US relies on Minutemen 3 for the ICBM force, missiles that were deployed in the 70’s capable of carrying a limited payload, Sarmat is the latest Russian ICBM that carries a payload of almost 9 tons and can attack US from any direction due to its range. Deploying hypersonic glide vehicles on the Sarmat would further diminish any attempt to intercept the missile’s payload. Although flying on a ballistic missile trajectory, Sarmat is capable of evasive actions against SM3 missile defenses.

Lone Ranger

Spot on. Also a funny thing is the Minuteman III has floppy disk launchers not the small disks but the big ones…?

Harry Smith

10 tons

Jesus

Yea, 9-10 tons. US relies on an ICBM fleet that is 50 years old, and a bomber force ( B52) that is much older than that.

Harry Smith

Even more. Sarmat is sub-orbital. This means not USA anti satellite missile neither THAAD can intercept it on the most vulnerable part of trajectory when warheads are detaching.

Tommy Jensen

We have Roemer.
