The Russian military has destroyed a British-made Stormer HVM short-range air defense system for the first time since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.

On March 11, the Russian Ministry of Defense released video footage showing the Stormer HVM being destroyed by a Lancet loitering munition. According to the ministry, the system was deployed on the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

The Stormer HVM, which is built around the chassis of the Alvis Stormer armored personnel carrier, was developed primarily to counter the threat of slow, low-flying aerial targets, like helicopters, drones and loitering munitions. The system is equipped with an electro-optical targeting system and can be armed with up to eight Martlet or Starstreak missiles.

The Martlet is guided by laser beam-riding with infrared terminal homing and a laser proximity sensor. The missile has a maximum range of eight kilometers. On the other hand, the older Starstreak is guided by SACLOS [Semi-automatic command to line of sighs] and armed with three submunitions, darts, which are guided by laser beam-riding. The missile has a maximum range of around seven kilometers.

The United Kingdom has reportedly supplied Kiev forces with at least six Stromer HVMs systems since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.

The Lancet was developed by the ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern. The Stormer HVM was targeted with the basic version of the loitering munition, the Izdeliye-52, which has an endurance of 40 minutes and a three-kilogram warhead.

The loitering munition is equipped with an electro-optical system that allows it to detect, track and lock on static and moving targets.

Kiev forces received several Western-made air defense systems from its allies in recent months. However, these systems have not been very effective. The Lancet strike on the Stormer HVM is a clear example of this.

Another backside of the moon or more far out comment.

leviathan

nope not yet. West Ukraine has been hammered but with 20-30k mercenaries and $100 bn support from the West, they are still kicking. Apparently no army has ever won on attack in the Donbass due the difficult terrain mix of towns, rivers and forests. In WWII the Germany and russia armies won by surrounding the Donbass and cutting it off. So Russia has taken on a difficult military challenge to attack the Donbass head on, this is far from over.
