The Russian military has destroyed one of Ukraine’s remaining FrankenSAM air defense systems with a first-person view (FPV) suicide drone.
The air defense system was targeted by drone operators from the Yug [South] Group of Forces between the settlements of Kramatorsk and Druzhkivka in the Donetsk direction. Video showing the strike surfaced online on September 15, although the system is falsely identified in the footage as a Soviet-made Strela-10 short-range air defense system.
Ukraine began developing the FrankenSAM two years ago, using its remaining Soviet-made Buk-M1 medium range air defense system as a base.
The country had some 70 Buk-M1 systems before the start of the Russian special military operation. Many of these systems have been already destroyed or damaged, including ones were converted to FrankenSAMs.
The FrankenSAM can reportedly utilize three different American-made anti-aircraft missiles: the semi-active radar-guided RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles, active radar-guided Patriot missiles and modified infrared-guided AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.
The system hit by the FPV suicide drone was clearly armed with RIM-7 missiles, which have a range of around 19 kilometers, way less than the 35 kilometer range of the Soviet-made 9М38M1 missile, the original armament of the Buk-M1.
The drone used in the attack was guided via a fiber-optic cable. Such drones cost as little as a few hundred dollars and typically have an average range of 10-20 kilometers.
Ukraine is struggling to keep its air defenses active, despite receiving significant support from its backers. Most of the country’s original Soviet-era air defense network has been wiped out, and Western-made systems making their way to the special military zone are getting destroyed or damaged very quickly.
