The Russian Ministry of Defense released on May 16 video footage of a drone attack on ammunition depots of Kiev forces in the Donetsk direction.
The video shows at least five Geran suicide drones impacting separate ammunition depots close to the settlement of Zolotoy Kolodez. The ministry didn’t provide any details on Ukrainian losses, but the footage shows multiple secondary blasts.
Russia produces two versions of the Geran, which are alleged to be copies of the Iranian-made Shahed-131 and 136 suicide drones.
Both drones are guided by a satellite-aided inertial navigation system. The Shahed-131 has a range of 900 kilometers with a warhead weighing 15 kilograms, while the Shahed-136 has a range of 2,500 kilometers with a warhead weighing 50 kilograms.
The proximity of the targeted Ukrainian ammunition depot in Zolotoy Kolodez to the frontline in Donetsk suggests that the lighter Geran-1 was used in the attack.
In addition to the two basic versions, which can only hit static targets, Russia has reportedly developed a long-range loitering munition based on the Geran-2 equipped with an electro-optical targeting system and a two-way datalink.
Geran drones are extremely difficult to detect due to their small radar cross-section and minimal infrared signature. Ukrainian attempts to counter these drones with air defense fire and electronic warfare have so far been mostly unsuccessful.
