A Russian interceptor drone rammed a Ukrainian aerostat carrying a Starlink-equipped drone at an altitude of more than 10,000 meters, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced on October 6.
According to the ministry, an operator from the 50th Separate Varyag Brigade of the Russian Unmanned Systems Forces struck the balloon in midair, forcing it into a rough landing. The ministry also released video footwing showing the interception.
The footage had circulated on Russian military channels a day earlier. Independent observers identified the target as an aerostat carrying a first-person view (FPV) suicide quadcopter beneath it. The exact location of the interception remains unknown.
Ukraine has been using small aerostats as airborne carriers that move drones along the first leg of the journey without draining the drones’ own batteries. Aerostats can follow favorable winds and release their payloads closer to Russian rear-area targets, extending the drones’ effective reach.
A Starlink terminal lets the carried drone keep a satellite connection after release, allowing it to reach areas that would otherwise lie beyond the range of an FPV suicide quadcopter’s control link.
The tactic has been reported in recent months as part of Ukrainian efforts to strike Russian logistics routes farther from the front. At altitudes of several kilometers, the aerostat itself is difficult to engage with conventional small-drone defenses, so detecting and intercepting it is a separate air defense challenge.
The incident suggests Moscow is now developing ways to target the carrier before the drone can be released. The Russian Defense Ministry has not said how the balloon was detected or whether the interceptor was designed specifically for this mission.
