The Russian military has shot down a Ukrainian Ukrspecsystems PD-2 fixed-wing drone carrying FPV suicide drones with an interceptor drone over the special military operation zone.
RIA Novosti shared footage of the successful interception on July 20. The interceptor used to take down the drone carrier was a version of the Boomerang, an FPV quadcopter known for its high maneuverability, its ability to fly at speeds up to 170 kilometers per hour and its high resistance to jamming.
The PD-2 was carrying two FPV quadcopter drones under its wings, apparently on an attack mission, when the Boomerang directly hit its propeller.
The downing of the PD-2 drone carrier by an interceptor drone shows how drone warfare is evolving, with unmanned systems playing roles which were previously preserved for other more traditional military systems.
The PD-2, which reportedly has an endurance of ten hours and an operational range of 180 kilometers, was originally developed for reconnaissance. However, it was developed to drop guided bombs weighing up to 3 kg. Later, Ukraine began to experiment with using the drone to deliver smaller FPVs.
The idea of drone carriers is to launch FPV suicide drones to far behind the frontline, all while acting a spotter and providing communication relay. The Russian military is already experimenting with its own drone carriers.
The Russian military expanded the use of FPV interceptor drones in recent months. Such drones are a much cheaper alternative to anti-aircraft missiles, which are also more complex to manufacture and operate.
