Russian Ka-52 attack helicopters have been actively targeting Ukrainian drone boats in the Black Sea, close to the Crimean Peninsula.
Video footage posted to social networks on June 21 showed Ka-52 helicopters sinking at least four such boats with S-8 rockets.
The latest version of the S-8, the S-8OFP, is powered with an improved motor with a range of up to six kilometers and armed with a high-explosive fragmentation weighing just over 9 kg. It is also equipped with dual-mode fuzes that allow it to detonate after penetration of concrete or light armor.
While the rocket is not guided, it is accurate enough to take out slow moving targets, including drone boats, from close range.
Ukraine intensified attempts to attack Crimea with drone boats in recent months, even employing some models which were carrying small FPV suicide quadcopters or armed with heat-seeking anti-aircraft missiles. The latter poses a serious threat to helicopters, but this risk is negligible for the Ka-52 which is equipped with an active protection suit including directional infrared countermeasures, or DIRCM.
Attack helicopters are very suitable for countering drone boats, especially the Ka-52 which is equipped with a radar and an electro-optical system that can detect and track such targets from a decent distance.

it never was announced as a 3 days military operation by russia. in fact, the longer and less costly it is for russia, the better it is as it strands us and nato ressources. that is why the us is retreating (again) : if it is stranded in ukraine, it is difficult for it to operate elsewhere. that’s why it withdrawn its air defense systems from ukraine.
