In Video: Russian Lancet Strike Takes Out Advanced Passive Radar Of Kiev Forces

MOSCOW REGION, RUSSIA – JUNE 25, 2019: A ZALA Lancet-3 attack drone developed by Kalashnikov Concern on display at the Army 2019 International Military Technical Forum at Patriot Park. Marina Lystseva/TASS

The Russian military has successfully targeted and destroyed a VERA-NG passive surveillance radar of Kiev forces for the time.

The radar was deployed out from a fortified hangar near the settlement of Bobrovka in the Kharkiv direction. It was targeted by the Russian Sever Group of Forces using a Lancet loitering munition. Video footage of the strike was posted to social networks on May 26.

The VERA-NG was designed by Czech defense contractor ERA to detect, locate, track and identify aerial, ground and naval targets as well as to provide continuous wave signal analysis.

The radar supports cross-border, long-term and long-range surveillance. The passive system is considered stealthy, as it emits zero electromagnetic energy making. It also provides the capability to collect and process electronic intelligence information.

ERA claims that the radar has a range of up to 400 kilometers and can detect up to 500 targets at real time via the time difference of arrival, or TDOA, principle.

The VERA-NG was not supplied to Ukraine by Czechia, but rather by the Netherlands who announced the purchasing of four such radars for Kiev forces back in June of 2023. The cost of the deal was €150 million, meaning the price of a single unit was around €37,5 million or just over $40,6 million.

The Lancet loitering munition used by the Russian military to destroy the VERA-NG radar costs an average of around $35,000.

The Lancet was developed by the ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern. The company produces two versions of the loitering munition, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 30 minutes and a one-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of 40 minutes and is armed with a warhead weighting three kilograms.

The loitering munition flies towards the designated area with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. After arriving in the area, the operator utilizes an onboard electro-optical system via a two-way data-link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser-ranging system then controls the detonation of the warhead.

The small radar cross-section and minimal infrared signature of the electric-powered loitering munition makes it very difficult to detect and intercept.

The destruction of the VERA-NG in Kharkiv highlights the advanced intelligence capabilities of the Russian military, as such passive radars are extremely hard to locate.

a missile would have completely destroyed the radar but also the men inside the hangar and perhaps other equipment, the lancet did little damage and it will be repaired later, for this time the lancet was useless

strongly depending on the missiles, if this is a fortified bunker. but as long as the radar system is down, the lancet was effective. not everything needs to be shredded to pieces to be broken

Perera

its a worthy target for fab – 500 not for lancet

it could be a 100$ fake chimney looking like a vera ng antenna.

anyway “lancet” is enough to hit both, because radars and mockups have no armor. but drone is cheaper than big bomb or ballistic/cruise missile. if it wasn’t mockup the strike could be repeated with something more serious to catch operators, foreign ones i guess.

the brics have to create a new airline watchdog organization which will exchange knowhow, safety standards and spread the technological achievements in order to promote safety, performance and passenger comfort in all member countries. russia, brazil and china are already able to produce, distribute and maintain the native airliners they built. but there is no common ‘bric’ safety standard yet. but this has to be created in order to avoid such accidents like with the heli in iran.

airbus…all you have to do is sit back and watch american boing planes fall out of the sky. the string of boing accidents is no accident. now the shoddy low quality workmanship is showing after wear and tear has revealed cracks in american work ethic. too much corruption and cutting corners

“the string of boing accidents is no accident.” i thought it was petrov’s and boshirov’s job. you have disappointed me, ha-ha-ha.

lvov, 29.05.2025. as a result of the night strike by the “kinzhals”, it is estimated that up to three hundred air force officers and nato allied forces personnel, including polish, french and american instructors, have been demilitarized. the wounded are taken to poland.

sounds like poetry to me. training ground of yavorov is well known by massive demilitarization since first days of smo.

otan piggies getting desperate! listen to western leaders squealing. they are hysterical. otan is losing to a country under sanctions with no ammo and one that ran out of missiles

a 35 thousand usd lancet killing a 40million usd radar sounds more than cost effective.

i can tell you, if this was the americans, they would have leveled that place to the ground. waste of time to send the lancet unless it’s to warn them to get out before they level the place, but really and truly, i don’t think russia gets the serious, insidious intent of these satanic worshipers to completely and utterly destroy them. every mark you hit, must be a message, a warning, and an embarrassment to them.

very cool, expensive target turned into garbage. it’s like to shot down a fighter, technical parameters of the station are impressive as well as price. passive location targets are harder to spot, because there is no own emission. uav operators and reconnaissance who found the target should have good reward.
