The Russian military has successfully targeted yet another Norwegian-American NASAMS air defense system of Kiev forces.
Videos showing the successful strike were posted to social media on March 22. The videos shows an unidentified Russian precision-guided missile destroying a NASAMS missile launcher deployed near the settlement of Privolnoye in the Zaporozhye region. The system’s Fire Distribution Center vehicle was parked nearby. However, it is unclear if it was targeted later.
The NASAMS was jointly developed by Norwegian Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and American Raytheon to defend against drones, helicopters, cruise missiles and warplanes. When armed with reprogrammed AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, the system has a range of 30 kilometers.
The United States, Norway and Canada pledged to provide Ukraine with a total of 11 NASAMS systems. In addition, Lithuania said that it will provide two launchers for the systems. It is unclear however how many have been really delivered. Other countries, including the United Kingdom, Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands, supplied hundreds of AMRAAM missiles to Kiev forces.
The Russian military has targeted Ukrainian NASAMS systems more than once, destroying several launchers and even American-made AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel fired control radars.
It’s worth noting that in recent months the Russian military stepped up suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) operations within the special military operation zone in Ukraine. As a result of these SEAD operations, Kiev forces lost dozens of air defense systems.
